However, a persistent challenge in STEM education is the use of intricate and complex terminology that can hinder students’ comprehension. While precise language is crucial for scientific accuracy, the over-reliance on difficult words or terms may create a barrier, impeding the learning process for students.
The Complexity Conundrum
STEM subjects often deal with intricate concepts and advanced theories, making it tempting for educators and experts to employ sophisticated terminology to communicate effectively within their community. However, the use of complex language poses a significant challenge for students, especially those in the early stages of their STEM education. Unfamiliar words can act as stumbling blocks, causing confusion and frustration, ultimately diminishing the students’ interest and understanding. Lost in Translation: When educators use difficult terms without providing adequate explanations or simplifications, students may struggle to connect the terms with tangible concepts. This results in a gap between what is said and what is understood, leading to a breakdown in communication. The disconnect can be detrimental to the learning process, hindering the development of a solid foundation of understanding that is essential for more advanced studies. Example of a challenging term in Form 1 Science is “mitosis”. Breaking down the term into its components reveals that “mitosis” refers to the process of cell division. However, understanding the phases and intricacies of mitosis can be demanding for students who are new to the topic.
Impact on Motivation
The use of difficult terminology can also have a negative impact on students’ motivation. Constantly encountering unfamiliar words can make STEM subjects appear daunting and unapproachable, leading to a decrease in students’ self-confidence. A lack of confidence can lead to disengagement, as students may feel discouraged from actively participating in class discussions or seeking help when needed.
