Lotus's, Unilever raise RM100,000 for underprivileged students

PETALING JAYA:  Lotus’s Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Lotus’s) and Unilever Malaysia recently collaborated to raise RM100,000 for five Lotus’s adopted schools in an initiative to mark World Children’s Day 2022.

The fundraising — themed ‘Inclusion, for every child’ — was conducted through the Unilever Back to School: Donate to Help Programme with Lotus’s Malaysia.

For every purchase of a Unilever product worth RM35 at any Lotus’s outlet, RM1 was channelled to the fund.

The funds were used to purchase essential Unilever goods, which benefited 1,000 less fortunate students from five schools adopted by Lotus’s: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Pandan in Johor, SK Kuala Selangor in Selangor, SK Pengkalan Baharu in Perak, SK Taman Bunga Raya 2 in Rawang and SK Sungai Puyu in Penang.

The goods were handed over by National Sales Manager – Hypermarket and Supermarket for Unilever Malaysia Benjamin Ang, Head of Communications and CSR of Lotus’s Malaysia Hanim Hamdan and General Manager of PINTAR Foundation Norazlina Masom.

Also present at the event were 25 students and their guardians from Lotus’s Ara Damansara adopted schools, SK Tropicana.

Hanim said: “We have collaborated with both Unilever and PINTAR separately in the past with great results. Therefore, we believe that by drawing on our collective strength, we will be able to have a greater impact on the children who need it the most.”

Ang hopes the programme will make a difference in the students’ lives and ease the burden on their parents.

“We believe that education is very important in shaping the younger generations’ future. With this programme, we wish to see an increase in their motivation to strive and excel in their studies,” he said.

The event featured a Lady’s Choice Sandwich Workshop aimed at helping students make nutritious sandwiches and a Lotus’s Pengguna Bijak programme to train them to become wise consumers.

Students also learned about price comparison and product quality as well as how to differentiate between needs and wants at Lotus’s Ara Damansara.

This overall initiative is part of Lotus’s #KitakanJiran effort to make a difference in the community.

Recently, 50 teachers from 63 schools adopted by Lotus’s graduated from the Teachers Leadership Programme, which featured seven months of training, workshops and professional-sharing sessions.

The programme enabled the teachers to create the right learning environment for their students and encourage a growth mindset in classrooms.

In October, Lotus’s teamed up with VSTECS Berhad to refurbish SK Seksyen 17 Shah Alam’s computer laboratory. They donated 50 laptops to the lab to expose teachers and students to a modern classroom setting and improve digital literacy.

Lotus’s welcomes any party to collaborate with it. A collaboration will benefit more people, allowing consumers to see the retailer as the preferred shopping destination with value, quality and affordable goods, as well as a caring neighbour that supports the community around it.
