SEPANG, July 4 — An elderly man was charged in the Sessions Court here today with posting offensive remarks against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Facebook in February.
However, the charges were not read out to the 61-year-old man due to his health and hearing issues.
Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman granted the accused permission to undergo psychiatric assessment, with the case fixed for mention on August 15.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) deputy public prosecutor Fadhli Ab Wahab and prosecuting officer Mohamad Azmir Mohd Razali appeared for the prosecution.
A warrant of arrest was issued by the court on 20 June after the man failed to appear in court twice.
The charge, framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and punishable under Section 233(3), provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction. — Bernama
