Kuala Lumpur: Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, the new president of the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM), said that the Madani Economic Framework, which means “civilization” in Arabic, will be one of the main goals of ABIM’s future development, aiming to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth that upholds human and social values. In the face of the plight of young people in Malaysia, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the issue of the Uyghurs in China, Ahmad Fahmi stated that he would provide institutional help to young people, support Palestine, and respect the choices of China’s ethnic minorities.
ABIM: Traditional Muslim Organization Embraces New Generation of Young Leaders
Founded in 1971, ABIM is a movement that promotes Islamic values and principles among Muslim youth and promotes solidarity and cooperation with other faith communities. It is also part of the World Muslim Youth Congress, a global network of Islamic education groups. The organization supports Madani’s economic narrative and empowers Malaysia’s Muslim youth to advance Islamic values and principles. Ahmad Fahmi has been active in ABIM for more than ten years, serves as an executive member of the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council in Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), and works for the Global Peace Mission. Ahmad Fahmi said he would soon resign from his position to fully focus on ABIM after he won the ABIM president on the 10th of December, 2023.
ABIM: Disagree with World Uyghur Congress’ Stance on Hamas
In regards of a statement issued by the World Uyghur Congress strongly condemning the Hamas attacks against State of Israel, Ahmad Fahmi said: “ABIM disagrees with the offcial statement of WUC, which condemned Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement, and that the movement has made a clear and heavy statement to criticize the WUC’s position.” Earlier in a statement, ABIM condemns WUC, which it regards as defending the inhumane actions of the Zionist regime of Israel against the Palestinian people in Gaza. ABIM pointed out that the WUC’s statement contradicts the principles they seek to represent for the Uyghur community. ABIM has consistently supported Hamas and the Palestinians and has participated in various humanitarian initiatives, including the delivery of 50 tons of aid to Gaza. ABIM’s support for the Uyghurs is not based on any political agenda but on the humanitarian and religious obligation to speak out on behalf of China’s Muslim minorities. Ahmad Fahmi said that ABIM is not against China as a country or nation but chooses to engage directly with the Chinese embassy to express differing opinions respectfully. “If people demand that ABIM withdraw or sever any ties (with WUC), we don’t have any direct or we call formal engagement with this group.” he emphasized. Ahmad Fahmi clarified that ABIM has no formal or direct engagement with any specific group, such as the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), which has been accused of condemning Hamas and the Palestinian cause.
